As soon as I can convince someone to let me use their scanner I’ll be uploading a few recent sketches from my recent obsession with Brian Froud and Conan the Barbarian.

Comic Reccomendation – Rocketo

Rocketo is a wonderful ongoing graphic novel (with the first Act now finished). It has a beautiful, near-abstract brush style that is as painterly as it is animatedly. Frank Espinosa is an animator, afterall, as he’s worked for Warner Bros as well as Disney in the past. So far the first act of the story is split into two volumes. Check it out if you live and breathe high adventure.

There is little on the internet that deserves as much love and praise as TED.com. In their words:

“We believe passionately in the power of ideas to change attitudes, lives and ultimately, the world. So we’re building here a clearinghouse that offers free knowledge and inspiration from the world’s most inspired thinkers, and also a community of curious souls to engage with ideas and each other.”

TED.com is where all the presentations from their annual conference are posted free, for everyone.

Go there and watch a couple presentations about your favorite topics (science, technology, design, art, environmentalism, philosophy, religion, business, culture…). Be inspired and change the world for the better.

Book Recommendation – Childhood’s End

// January 28th, 2009 // No Comments » // Books, Recommendations

As much as I enjoy sci-fi I can’t say I’ve read a lot of it. I just finished Childhood’s End by Arthur C. Clarke last week and I really enjoyed it. It’s a well known book to any regular reader of sci-fi, but in case you aren’t familiar with it, I highly recommend you give it a look. It came out back in 1953 and brought some interesting new ideas with it. The book has inspired countless others and for good reason.

Here’s the premise: A bunch of aliens suddenly appear over all the major cities in the world (Yep, ID4 snagged that idea) and they tell the people of earth that they will help lead them to a new era… world peace, improved health, scientific breakthroughs… all the good stuff. The catch is that they will not physically reveal themselves or explain who they are.

It’s an interesting idea that is ripe for a fancy plot twist. However, the book goes far, far, far beyond this premise and it would be a disservice to you if I said any more.

It’s not hard sci-fi, it’s a quick read (around 200 pages), and the prose is simple and fluid. Give it a shot even if you don’t like sci-fi… I think you’ll like it.

Superbole Sketch

My friend, Ben, and I will be doing a silly collaboration comic where we each draw 5 characters and have them… fight.. alternating every page. Here’s one of my characters so far. Still working on the rest.
